University of Alabama Starts Program to Help Community College Students Transition to Universities

Beginning this fall, the University of Alabama will offer a program that provides tuition and fees to deserving community college transfers. Recently, trustees of the university approved $500,000 in funding, which is expected to help at least 170 needy students coming from community colleges. Although other states have similar programs to help needy students from community colleges, this program is the first of its kind in Alabama. The university is prepared to increase funding for the program to $1.5 million based on the program's level of success.

Named Alabama's Promise, the new program will help students who have completed at least two years of community college and are qualified for full federal Pell Grants. Students must have "B" grade point averages or higher to qualify for the program.

The amount contributed by Alabama under the program will depend on the final amount set by Congress for Pell Grants. If Congress does not raise the maximum Pell Grant to $4,600 from $4,310, then Alabama will consider paying more under Alabama's Promise.

Alabama's Promise is currently slated to cover tuition and fees that will not be covered by Pell Grants. The amount paid by the program would be around $2,908 per student per year according to estimates made by the university's Education Policy Center.

Although university authorities have yet to find out how many students will actually benefit from this program, at least 300 students are expected to qualify, while the present funds are sufficient to cover the tuition and fees of at least 170 students. According to the university's Education Policy Center, the percentage of students moving from community colleges to the University of Alabama in 2004-2005 was less than half the national average.
