Teachers

Teaching is a great and honorable profession. You help to mold and shape young minds. You're educating the next generation. And you're a role model for hundreds of youth. Despite these facts, teachers often get scant respect. Nowhere is that more evident than in their paychecks. Well, despite the low salaries in the teaching profession, you can get a teaching gig that can help you pay off your loans, or more, accurately, one that will qualify you to have your loans forgiven.

Do this by teaching special education courses, teaching at a school that services low-income students, or teaching in a designated teacher-shortage area. The American Federation of Teachers maintains a list of other loan forgiveness programs for teachers at www. aft.org/teachers/jft/loanforgiveness.htm.

Volunteers

As a volunteer, you basically agree to swap your time and talents in the interest of the public good. And hey, there's nothing wrong with being a do-gooder—especially if it'll bail you out of those massive student loans. Here are some volunteer programs to check into in order to get student loan forgiveness:

AmeriCorps. You have to agree to devote a year of your life volunteering for AmeriCorps, and in exchange you'll get $4,725 to pay down your college debt, and a stipend of up to $7,400. AmeriCorps is administered by the Corporation for National Service. Here's how you can contact them:

Corporation for National and Community Service
1201 New York Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20525

VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America). Vista focuses on community development and ending poverty, homelessness, and illiteracy in the United States. This organization will pay off $4,725 of your loans if you help them promote their cause for at least 1,700 hours. Call 1-800-942-2677 or log onto www.friendsofvista.org.

How EdFed Helped others!
When I was comparing lenders to consolidate my student loans I really looked at customer service. I was impressed that EdFed offered me my own loan counselor so I was able to speak with the same person every time I called. This was what persuaded me to go with EdFed and boy am I glad I did.
